Royal Blood have released new music for the first time since their self-titled 2014 debut album. ‘Where Are You Now’ was written and recorded for HBO’s music drama Vinyl, and given the similarity in sound to this new track and their LP, don’t expect it to go under the radar.
It contains their trademark thrashing combo of bass and drums, as well as sleek garage-edged riffs in between Mike Kerr’s dynamic vocals, that combine hushed composure with exuberant swagger.
The opening features a controlled drum sequence building into the vocals of Kerr depicting ‘an honest boy who fell for an honest girl’ who were ‘so tight’ yet they appear to drift further apart and he longs for her return as he ‘tasted every potion, it don’t taste like you’. He seems desperate without his young crush ‘wishing I could go back somehow’. The Brighton duo set in stone a new era for British indie with the release of their debut, influencing the likes of Wolf Alice as a result.
They certainly have a defined style, with explosive choruses and Kerr’s vocal range, they make light work of the perceived difficulties of performing with only two members, making a strong claim to be Britain’s best duo since the Pet Shop Boys and if they continue in the same vein, who knows what they are capable of achieving ?
